Trevorton coal mine fire Fire crews were back again for the 6th day to try and keep a mine fire in check while local and state officials try and come up with a plan for full extinguishment. The fire, near the memorial cross for fallen coal miners, over looks Treverton and sits just several feet away from an active fire under ground. The fire was first reported Saturday afternoon and crews arrived to smoke pouring from the ground. The several hundred foot deep hole is supposedly filled with tires and other household trash , some of which is visible when the smoke lifts for a second. The fire may have made its way into a coal vein below the tires due to the sulfur like smell coming out with the smoke at times. Approximately 200,000 gallons of water was shuttled up mountain over the weekend by multiple tankers with almost another 200,000 used since the weekend as a single tanker continues to shuttle water.
