Officials in Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, managed to rescue a dolphin that was stranded in a pond for two days.

Footage from April 30 shows the rescue team wrapping a blanket around the dolphin before hauling it onto a boat. They then sailed out to sea where they are seen releasing the dolphin.

Muhammad Risal, the coordinator of the rescue, said that he was amazed that the dolphin managed to reach the pond as it was located about 5 kilometres from the sea.

He also mentioned that the pond owner had been feeding fish to the stranded dolphin to keep it alive.

In footage filmed in Mara Village, Maros Regency, South Sulawesi province this afternoon (Friday, April 30), show the joint evacuation team officials worked hand in hand to evacuate adult dolphins from the pond.

This protected animal is thought to have gotten lost after separated from a herd of about twenty while foraging for food in the river path.

Muhammad Risal, coordinator of the evacuation team for the Makassar Coastal and Marine Ecosystem Management, said that the dolphin was reported lost in a pond belonging to residents on Thursday morning yesterday.

Initially, the pond owner who found dolphins in the pond was amazed why these mammals were able to get to the pond as the distance of the pond to the sea was quite far, about five kilometers.

Previously, the owner of the pond had time to feed milkfish and other fish so that the dolphins would not starve.

"Evacuation can only be carried out today because yesterday low tide didn't allow it to be evacuated through the river," said Risal.

After high tide Friday morning, the team finally got the dolphins out of the pond.

The team took the dolphins by boat along the creek to release the dolphins into the sea.

"We had difficulty evacuating because the dolphins were active. This is a positive sign because it means the dolphins are in good health. These are rough-toothed dolphins or steno bredanensis," Risal added.
