Thousands took to the streets of São Paulo, Brasilia, and Rio de Janeiro on May 1 in support of president Jair Bolsonaro.

Demonstrators joined the event despite a surge in coronavirus cases and 403,000 deaths.

Bolsonaro's supporters marched in the main cities against the COVID-19 restrictions imposed by mayors.

Two weeks before the event, the Brazilian president called on his supporters saying that he was waiting for "a sign from the people" to revoke the local measures enacted to contain the spread of the virus.

Several thousand Brazilians marched Saturday in support of far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, ignoring a surging pandemic even as government opponents took their own protests online.

There were rallies in Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, with many demonstrators wearing the yellow and green of the country's flag.

Brazil, with more than 403,000 Covid-19 deaths, is second only to the United States in that grim category, and Bolsonaro faces widespread criticism for not taking the pandemic more seriously.
