Forest officials rescue elephant calf from 30-feet-deep-well in eastern India
Forest officials rescued an elephant calf that fell into a 30-feet-deep-well in eastern India's Jharkhand on May 2. The incident took place in the Sariya block of the Giridih district.
Visuals shot on May 3 feature the forest officials rescuing the elephant calf. They deploy three excavators in the region, which dig the land adjacent to the well to provide a corridor for the jumbo. Meanwhile, the elephant moves around inside the well. Later, the jumbo manages to walk onto the ground via the passage while the onlookers gathered at a safe distance cheer the proceedings.
The calf belongs to a herd of 22 elephants wandering about the forest cover of Sariya Block for the past few days. It fell into the well on Sunday night, following which the locals alerted the Forest Department, who conducted a rescue operation on Monday morning. The officials used excavators to create a passage for the jumbo, which ran straight towards the village after coming out.
The rescue team included Abhay Kumar Sinha, Assistant Conservator of Forest Hazaribagh East forest division/Range Forest officer Bagodar, Purushottam Pande, Forester Sariya, Uday Kumar Keshri, Sub-beat Officer Sariya, Kundan Kumar Das, Sub-beat Officer Sariya, Anshu Pandey, Sub-beat Officer Bishnugarh, Shyam Kumar, Sub-beat Officer Bishnugarh, and Hari Shankar Verma, Sub-beat Officer Giridih East forest division.
The forest officials are trying to drive the calf towards its herd. The same group also killed a young man in the region on Thursday, following which the officials have sounded an alert in the area.
