Tropical storms pulled down electricity posts onto flooded roads after battering northern Thailand yesterday (May 3).

Strong winds and thunderstorms lasting more than four hours damaged buildings and caused long traffic jams in Chiang Mai province.

The fallen electricity posts smashed vehicles and motorcycles that were parked nearby while roads became unpassable.

Local officials surveyed these areas after the storm to evaluate the damages and provide relief to those who were affected.

A Thai Meteorological Department official said the southeasterly and the southerly winds accompanied with the westerly trough from Myanmar caused the storms in northern Thailand.

He said: ‘Thunderstorms are decreasing but there will still be isolated gusty winds. People in this area should beware of the severe conditions. Farmers should prepare for crop damage.’
