Bushfires are a regular part of the Australian environment, and the continent’s Eucalyptus-dominated forests are particularly fire-prone. The managers of State Forests and National Parks conduct controlled burns in Spring and Autumn with the intention of reducing fuel loads to prevent catastrophic wildfires during the hot Summer. In April 2021 Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, was covered in smoke from controlled burns in the State Forests in the Darling Scarp to the city’s east. The dense smoke reduced visibility and caused respiratory distress to many people. This short video shows the beginning of the problem with a view of the Perth CBD from Herdsman Lake to the west of the city, to the all-engulfing smoke haze a few day later seen from two sites on the Swan and Canning Rivers.
