Chiang Mai in northern Thailand has been declared a dark red zone following several spikes in Covid-19 infections. Severe restrictions have been implemented, including bar and massage parlour closures, restaurants restricted to take-aways only and fines of up to 20,000 Baht (GBP 500) for not wearing a mask in public. A 100 metre area of the night bazaar indicates the economic cost on businesses, many of which have been closed since last year and may not reopen.
Most hotels and guesthouses are closed, rail traffic curtailed, vehicle traffic is light, schools closed, staff unemployed. It's very depressing.
Today,May 5, the government announced Thailand had 15 new Covid deaths,making a grand total of 318 plus 2,112 new infections, making a grand total of 74,900 since records began. Most provinces are under restrictions.
