Woman tries 'petition scam' on tourist in Paris
A video has emerged from Paris, France of a 'scammer' allegedly trying to trick passing tourists in a 'petition scam'.
The filmer says the 'scam' involves pushing people who seem like tourists into signing, purportedly for a charity, and making a donation.
The donation then, according to the filmer, goes straight into the pocket of the alleged scammer while others might attempt to pickpocket the victim while they’re distracted.
This example, filmed in 2012, shows the woman then storming off after the filmer challenges her - camera rolling.
The filmer wrote online: " There is no organization behind the 'petition'. Any money 'donated' goes straight into the pockets of the scammers or worse yet, into the pockets of their over-bosses typically found in certain Roma communities in their home country of Romania.
"As well the petition signing can be a distraction while a partner pickpockets the tourists' wallets or purses.
"When in Paris DO NOT SIGN PETITIONS, ignore such individuals. Be particularly vigilant in heavily touristed areas (i.e. along the river Seine as shown in this video).
"As I was walking along the bank of the river I noticed this woman approaching people with her supposed petition and started recording to try to capture the scam on video.
"The scammers will typically first ask if you speak English. This is done to help qualify you as a tourist and not some French speaking local."
