Indonesia's Mount Sinaburg sent clouds of volcanic ash thousands of metres into the sky after erupting on May 7.

Footage shows a large column of ash pluming into the air.

Officials have advised locals to wear masks to avoid respiratory problems.

Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra, Indonesia eruption and spewed volcanic ash with a column height of 2,800 meters, according to officials from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG).

In footage filmed by Dori Girsang, a local resident in his garden in Karo district on Friday (7 May) at 9:13 a.m., volcanic ash erupted straight upwards, unlike the usual sideways eruption ash column.

"The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity, leaning towards the east," Dori said.

"Sinabung activity is still very high and there can be further eruptions and hot clouds at any time," PVMBG Officer Muhammad Asrori said to media.

Asrori appealed to residents whose areas were affected by the eruption of the Sinabung volcanic ash to wear masks to avoid respiratory problems.
