Distressing footage has emerged of school children jumping from windows to flee a shooter in Russia.

Shocking video captured during the shooting on Tuesday (May 11) shows two children jumping out of the third-floor windows of Public School Number 175 in the Russian city of Kazan, more than 800km east of Moscow, after attackers had opened fire inside the building. Others can be seen fleeing across a grassy area. Screams can be heard.

Seven children and two adults were killed in the shooting, according to reports. Twenty-one others, mostly children, were injured.

A 19-year-old suspect has been detained.

On the morning of May 11, its 19-year-old graduate Ilnaz Galyaviev came to gymnasium No. 175 on Jaudat Faizi Street. Eyewitnesses report that first there was an explosion, then shooting began. A few minutes later Galyaviev was detained at the entrance to the school. According to the official version of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, he acted alone. However, after his arrest, messages appeared in Telegram channels that another attacker had been eliminated on the fourth floor of the school.

After the shooting began, the children barricaded themselves in the classrooms on the orders of the school staff. As the attacker approached, the students jumped from the windows - according to eyewitnesses, some were injured, someone managed to run out through the entrance to the gymnasium. Later, the students were evacuated through the fire escape. The first aid to the injured was provided in the courtyard of the school - 21 ambulance teams arrived at the scene.
