A whale calf and its mother created miniature rainbows as they sprayed clouds of water into the air off the coast of southern California.

Footage from May 12 shows the duo rising to the surface where large puffs of water are emitted from their spouts.

As the light reflects, stunning mini rainbows are formed.

The filmer told Newsflaer: "A mother and her baby grey whale migrating north create a beautiful rainbow from their spouts.

"Grey whales have the longest migration of any mammal on the planet and this calf is about 3 months old, making its first journey up to Alaska.

"Viewed with a drone while aboard a whale-watching boat called Newport Coastal Adventure, much to the thrill of passengers."
