The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Red Alerts for several districts in Kerala state, as storm surges inundate homes near the coast.

The IMD expects the cyclone to become a 'very severe cyclonic storm'. Heavy rains are expected in Kerala, Gujarat, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

IMD Issues Red Alert for several districts in Kerala . Cyclone Tauktae which is currently centered over Lakshadweep intensified into a cyclonic storm this morning. In Thrissur district of Kerala strong winds and rains happened , strong sea sea waves were also witnessed . The IMD expects the cyclone to further intensify and become a 'very severe cyclonic storm' by May 17. Heavy rains are expected in Kerala, Gujarat, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat .
A red alert which can cause extremely heavy rainfall of more than 20cm has been alerted in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur Kasaragod and Union territory of Lakshadweep . Orange alert of 11-20 cm for very heavy rainfall in seven districts of Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur. The coastal areas were bearing the brunt of very rough seas and squally weather for the last three days as the low marked pressure area developed into a deep depression along the west coast.
