Delray Beach in Florida has been lined with sargassum seaweed that smells like rotten eggs.

Footage from May 17 filmed by Larry Richardson shows chunks of the marine plant washing up on the beach.

According to reports, the seaweed begins to smell like rotten eggs when washed ashore. Swimmers also have trouble navigating through the seaweed.

Stinky sargassum seaweed has arrived on South Florida beaches. A wide and thick strand of seaweed runs all along the beachfront from Miami on northward through at least Palm Beach County. The seaweed isn't just bad to look at, it can also be smelly and abrasive to skin and it breeds flies. Swimmers can have a tough time swimming through waterborne mats to reach open ocean.

The seaweed typically washes up on South Florida beaches between March and October. Scientists say warmer ocean temperatures and nutrient rich run-off from farms and lawns are causing a massive growth of seaweed in the Caribbean and off of Brazil. When pieces break off and hit the Gulf Stream, the seaweed rafts can blow into South Florida on an easterly wind. Coastal resort communities in Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean are dealing with the seaweed invasion buy burying it in the sand and/or collecting it and trucking it off-site.

While some fish and marine animals rely on the seaweed for food and cover, sea turtle hatchlings find it difficult to clamber through the tangled mass on their way to the sea.
