Cyclone Tauktae slammed in the Indian state of Gujarat on Monday (May 17) with high winds and pounding rain.

Footage showed uprooted trees, large waves and some damage to properties.

Indian authorities moved nearly 150,000 people from their homes in anticipation of the storm.

The cyclone killed at least 12 people and left a trail of destruction as it passed through the coastal states of Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.

Cyclone Tauktae has intensified into an "extremely severe cyclonic storm". Gusty winds and rains lashed Mumbai and its neighboring areas today morning as the "very severe cyclonic storm" Tauktae was heading towards Gujarat. It was expected to reach the Gujarat coast on the late evening of May 17. According to the Cyclone Warning Division of the IMD, by May 18 the wind speed is expected to increase to 150-160 km per hour, gusting up to 175 km per hour.The gradual intensification stages are cyclonic storm, severe cyclonic storm, very severe cyclonic storm, extremely severe storm and super cyclonic storm.

This year's first cyclone has added to the woes of the states which are already grappling with the devastating second wave of COVID-19. Gujarat has evacuated 200,000 people from 17 districts along its coastal belt in view of the extremely severe cyclonic storm “Tauktae.
