Mmusi Maimane, the leader of South Africa's official opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, addressed a small group of supporters around the corner from where the government was holding public hearings for the changing of Section 25 of the constitution. The amendments to Section 25 of the constitution would allow government to expropriate land without compensation.

Despite large scale land reform since the dawn of democracy in 1994, more than 70% of the land in South Africa is still owned by the white minority, who make up less than 10% of the population. Under the apartheid regime, most black people were forcibly removed from their native lands and government settled people into racially classified areas.
