Indonesians get vaccinated at Bali shopping mall in unusual inoculation drive

Indonesians lined up for their second coronavirus vaccine jab at a shopping mall in Bali on Friday 21 May.

The vaccine being administered at Mal (mall) Bali Galleria was China’s Sinopharm vaccine, a central plank of the country’s inoculation effort.

Whereas other countries have prioritised the elderly and ill for jabs and kept strict central control over their administration, Indonesia is also letting younger people be vaccinated and allowing employers and other private companies to organise inoculations too.

The theory is that it is more important to vaccinate people as quickly as possible, and that in a country with a youthful population, most of whom do not have jobs that can be done at home, vaccinating the young will slow down transmission more than in developed countries.
