A team from India's forest department on Sunday (May 23) rescued a baby elephant that became trapped after falling into a reservoir in West Bengal.

Footage showed the team breaking one of the walls of the water source in the Alipurduar district to allow the wild animal to haul itself to safety.

The cute baby was unharmed by the ordeal and was later reunited with its herd.

The forest officials rescued an elephant calf that fell into a water body in eastern India's West Bengal on May 23. The incident took place in the Adma beat in Kalchini block, located in the Alipurduar district.

A video features the wildlife officials rescuing the elephant calf. They break one of the reservoir's walls and then support the jumbo with ropes and sticks while it mounts the surface. After struggling for a while, the elephant calf finally gets out of the reservoir and strays towards the forest cover.

The elephant calf fell into a reservoir that supplies water to the village. Following this, the watchtower staff contacted the forest department. Initially, the patrolling party reached the spot, followed by the local range staff. Meanwhile, a mobile squad and a veterinary team were kept on standby.

Moreover, after a four-hour-long operation, the officials rescued the elephant successfully. The forest officials associated with the Pana range and the Buxa Tiger Reserve saved the calf and reunited it with its herd. Meanwhile, the mother elephant beheld the incident from a safe distance.
