One of just 12 chain ferries still operating in Great Britain, Reedham ferry's recorded history dates back to the 1770s - but there may have been some kind of ferry here earlier.
The present ferry was built in 1983, and can carry up to 3 cars. It is operated by a single ferryman, and powered by a diesel engine, which drives two chainwheels or "gypsies" which grip the chain - so the ferry pulls its way along the static chain which lies on the river bed and is fastened at each end. This system ensures that the ferrry is correctly connected to the shore at both sides, and removes the need for navigation equipment and specific nautical skills.
