MOUNT CARMEL, Northumberland County.
At approximately 1:30 p.m. Friday, fire crews were dispatched to a home in the 200 block of South Poplar Street in Mount Carmel Borough for a report of a house fire. Upon arrival crews were met with heavy fire from the third story of the structure.
James Haynes, a neighbor, called 911 as he was getting home and saw the flames coming from the window.
“I got 911 on the phone and I ran in the house to see if there was anyone there,” Haynes said.
Haynes then proceeded to help an older man and woman out of the home to safety, before alerting neighbors of the fire. However, Haynes does not consider himself a hero for his actions.
“I would hope someone would do that for me if I was in there” Haynes said. “I don’t think it’s really a hero. It’s just the right thing to do”
The fire was brought under control by 4:00 p.m. and there were no reports of any injuries or how many were displaced. Several pets taken from the home, but their condition is unknown at this time.
