Interviews with people during anti-government protest in Bogota, Colombia
This footage was filmed and produced 28 May 2021.
What began as a strike against a tax proposal in Colombia has now escalated into a nationwide protest movement over some of Colombia’s most deep-seated issues. Protesters are demanding structural changes to ease inequality and end police violence.
The video shows different groups of citizens marching against the Colombian government, commemorating one month of protest, without a serious response from the president Duque administration, or an objective proposal pointing a clear path to normality.
Interviews:
1) Carolina Cubillos - Mothers Against Impunity Collective
Since the beginning of the National Strike, on April 28, we decided to take to the streets and mobilize because we are tired of the State killing our children and that social protest is not guaranteed as a right that we should have. We left because it has already been 20 years of uribism and during all this time, and even long ago, we have not had the best conditions in our town: unemployment increased, poverty increased and there are conditions that we cannot bear any longer. For this reason, mothers against impunity take to the streets. In addition, for each mobilization the deaths increase; we don't want any more dead in our streets.
In our country we have been accustomed to being silent, not saying anything, to being afraid. But we have overcome that fear and we have decided that it is in the streets where we have to make ourselves heard because we cannot allow them to continue massacring in our town, as if nothing else, and we as mothers want to show solidarity with all those mothers who whose children were killed and we can no longer bear this pain of these mothers.
2) María - Public Health Worker
They call us the heroes of health and we continue with the same contract without benefits, with nothing.
Precisely because of everything that is happening with young people, because of everything that is needed in hospitals. There is also a lack of benefits, job stability, human talent, humanization and respect.
