An Indian artist has created a remarkable penny-farthing model from thousand of matchsticks to mark World Bicycle Day.

Eighteen-year-old Saswat Ranjan Sahoo from Odisha state spent seven days crafting the impressive work and used 3,653 matches.

In April 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 3 as International "World Bicycle Day".

The UN website has the following description of the day:

"World Bicycle Day draws attention to the benefits of using the bicycle — a simple, affordable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation."

On the occasion of World Bicycle Day(June 3rd) am artist of Puri district of Odisha Saswat ranjan sahoo, age- 18, have made a penny farthing bicycle by using 3653 match sticks and the size of this craft work is 50 inch length and 25 inch width, it took me 7 days to prepare such a craft.

The penny farthing bicycle was extensively used during the period between 1870 to 1880, now a days people use bicycle for health and exercise purposes and the use of bicycle also reduces environment pollution which is very necessary now.Therefore Saswat has prepared this craft work to raise awareness of bicycle use and he request everyone to use bicycle and stay healthy alongwith pollution free.

Saswat prepared the penny farthing bicycle because when he was studying in school he saw this bicycle which attracted him very much, he also wished to have such a bicycle but these type of bicycle was not available in our locality therefore he thought of to make this bicycle for the occasion of World Bicycle Day said to ANI.

The resolution for World Bicycle Day recognises "the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport.
