Mount Etna in Italy's Sicily erupted again on the morning of June 2, with video showing lava spewing from a southeast crater and a large plume of ash.

At their peak, the lava fountains reached heights of 300-400 metres, according to local sources.

The eruptive episode at the South-East Crater of Etna that began on the morning of June 2, 2021 reached the lava fountain phase at 08:30 UTC (10:30 local time), generating an eruptive cloud that rose several kilometers being blown by the east-southeast wind. Relapse of ash and small lapilli (up to 1.0-1.5 cm) was observed in the northern part of Zafferana Etnea and in Santa Venerina. The activity, which was again concentrated at the "mouth of the saddle", also produced a modest overflow of lava, which headed southwest.
In the phase of maximum intensity, the lava fountains reached heights of 300-400 m. Two vents were periodically active in the "saddle" area, as already observed during the eruptive episodes of 28 and 30 May 2021.
The lava fountain activity lasted until about 10:40 UTC, then the explosive activity quickly diminished and was essentially finished at 10:50 UTC.
The magnitude of the volcanic tremor showed the usual, rather sudden increase at the beginning of the episode, and a rapid collapse at the end; its source was located under the Southeast Crater. The infrasonic signals also came from the same crater; small variations in tilt were recorded, as usual during the eruptive episodes at the Southeast Crater. (source INGV - Catania)
