For a group of families on the Cape Flats, the Covid pandemic did not only bring a medical threat but it robbed them of a place to stay.

Known as " Backyard dwellers" these residents have been staying on a open field in district six for months hoping they would get assistance from the Government of the Western Cape. They are staying in informal structures and small camping tents exposed to the Cape Town winter weather, without ablution facilities and any form of protection.

One resident feels that they are being ignored and ill treated as the local councillor from the City of Cape Town responsible for housing and Human Settlements, Mr Malusi Booi Allegedly told her " to go back to where she came from". They also feel as if economic apartheid still exists in the country.
