The Florida Department of Health in Lee County issued a health alert after toxic blue-green algae was detected at the Franklin Locks on the Caloosahatchee River. Officials found the harmful algae in a water sample collected on June 1. This video, taken June 7, features ground and drone video of the Franklin Lock where the algae was found and the Moore Haven Lock and Dam, where algae-tainted water from Lake Okeechobee has been released into the Caloosahatchee River. Health officials warn the public not to drink, swim, wade or use water craft in areas where the bloom is visible. They also advise people who come into contact with the algae to wash their skin and clothing with soap and water. The final clip is of a sugar cane field. Environmentalists blame runoff rich in fertilizer from agriculture fields for feeding the algae blooms that have harmed marine life and the state's tourism industry.
