Russian sailors rescued a fluffy white dog last week that was stranded on cracked Arctic sea ice in the autonomous Yamal-Nenets region.

According to reports, one-year-old samoyed "Aika" had strayed far from her owner and village and was seen wandering around the "Alexander Sannikov" icebreaker.

Footage from June 2 showed the crew lowering a ladder down to the stricken pooch as she stepped gingerly around the cracked ice.

Moments later she climbed aboard and greeted the sailors with a wag of the tail.

According to reports, "AIka" was then taken by hovercraft back to her home village where she was reunited with her owner.

On Yamal, the crew of the Gazprom Neft icebreaker rescued a dog lost in the ice. The snow-white dog ran away from the mistress in the village of Cape Kamenny - they had been looking for a pet Aiku for more than a week. The lost dog was noticed by the crew of the icebreaker "Aleksandr Sannikov" while unloading oil through the "Gates of the Arctic" terminal. The dog was in mortal danger: ice drift had already begun on the river, the surface was in cracks, at any moment the dog could die - the chances of salvation were scanty. Employees of Gazpromneft-Yamal immediately lifted the one-year-old Aika aboard - the animal was safe. Later, the dog was taken on an air cushion and handed over to the owner.
