Plastic surgery clinics struggle to survive after being forced to close due to Covid-19 third wave in Thailand
Footage shows dozens of plastic surgery clinics which are struggling to survive today (June 10) after they were forced to close due to the emergence of a third wave of Covid-19 cases in Thailand.
The country’s most severe outbreak started in strip clubs in the capital Bangkok in April and lead to sweeping restrictions on businesses with only shopping malls allowed to stay open.
Dozens of cosmetic surgery beauty clinics based in the Siam district of the city have been closed, with many moving out of their premises and closing their business. Others fear that the ongoing restrictions will also force them to close.
Officials hope that a mass vaccination rollout that started this week – with more than 400,000 people receiving their first doses a day – will allow the country to open again. However, ministers have not indicated when business can start to re-open.
While economists said that it could be another five years before the country’s tourism industry returns to pre-pandemic levels.
Two years ago tourism made up an estimated 21 per cent of Thailand’s GDP, generating 1.8 trillion baht in revenue. However, the country’s National Economic and Social Development Council predicted that it could be another five years before similar numbers are seen.
Analysts said that between now and 2026, around seven million workers will continue to be affected by the economic harm from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Thailand has recorded 187,538 Covid-19 cases and 1,375 deaths as of June 10.
