South African opposition party rocked by another qualifications scandal
ANC (African National Congress) Western Cape parliamentary opposition leader Camreon Dugmore and Xolani Sotashe (ANC caucus head in the City of Cape Town) today laid fraud charges against Cape Town Mayoral Committee member JP Smith. Smith allegedly falsely claimed that he had an honours degree in English from Stellenbosch University. The ANC claims they have proof of at least two instances in which Smith claimed he had an honours degree.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) who appointed JP Smith as the political head of safety and security in the City of Cape Town has been rocked by several fake qualification scandals in recent months. Bonginkosi Madikizela was removed as Western Cape DA leader and resigned as a member of the Western Cape legislature after its came to light that he was not in possession of a bachelor’s degree, which was reflected on his official biography.
Xanthea Limberg, the Mayco member for water and sanitation also claimed to have a degree, however she is still studying towards a degree. The DA mayor of Saldanha, also claims to have an MBA degree but has has not been able to provide proof of such.
DA Party leader John Steenhusien himself is only in possession of a matric certificate. DA Chief Whip Natasha Mazzone was recently outed for claiming she had a law degree but has not graduated with a university degree.
