Meet the newlyweds who left their jobs and their 1,000 square foot home for a life on the road in a 70 square foot van.

Ben and Malory Landheer spent $25,500 on their Ford Transit T-350 van and laid down a further $13,000 turning the vehicle into a tiny home with a fold-away mattress, running water and a compostable toilet.

The couple quit their jobs in ministry and set off from their hometown in Charlotte, North Carolina, in March.

They travelled to the Florida Keys, before driving through Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona to California where they are now.

But their motorhome has no shower so the pair pop into the nearest branch of Planet Fitness every time they need a wash.

Ben, 29, said: “This lifestyle has been 10 out of 10 so far.

“We are living our best lives.

“But it’s definitely not for everyone - some people need certain comforts in life.”

Ben and Malory, 25, tied the knot in a tiny COVID-friendly wedding last April after they were forced to cancel their 180-guest planned event.

Malory said that the pandemic gave them the nudge they needed to quit their jobs and their $1,500-per-month apartment in favor of a life on the road.

Malory said: “The pandemic nudged us along.

“We both got COVID, our wedding got cancelled, our jobs intensified and we knew we didn’t want to live in Charlotte forever.

“It was a lot of things happening all at once and we wanted to get back to basics.

“Last August we were just kind of playing around with the idea.

“Ben had sold his house so we started off our marriage with a chunk of change.

“It started as a joke and it ended up being serious.”

The husband and wife, who were living in a 1000 square foot apartment together, bought the van which used to transport olive oil around the United States and Ben spent five months revamping it into a home.
