Workers on a beach in Jakarta take apart huge ships each day so they can sell pieces of scrap metal.

Footage from June 23 shows labourers using heavy tools to break down huge parts of vessels that are no longer in use.

Ships are steered onto the beach at high tides and workers are usually paid around $12 USD a day.

More than 90 percent of the world's ocean-going container ships end up on the shores of India, Pakistan, Indonesia, or Bangladesh, where labor is cheap, demand for steel is high, and environmental regulations are lax. Ships are driven into the 10km beach strip here at high tide, where demolition begins for a fee usually no more than USD12 per day for the workers.
