This beautiful double rainbow cuts through the grey clouds above a winding road.

Rainbows are formed when sunbeams collide with raindrops and change direction, or 'refract', splitting the white light into a spectrum of colour.

The refracted light then reflects off the inside wall of the droplet and splits further when it emerges into the air causing a visible rainbow.

A double rainbow is formed when this light is reflected twice within one raindrop, to form two separate archways of colour.

The rare phenomenon occurred in rural Graceville in Minnesota, USA by agricultural business owner Carol Bauer, 56.

Carol said: "On this date we laid my Mom to rest after a brief battle with cancer, she was 89, so this was such beautiful inspirational sight to see on this day.

"My son was home and alerted me to this rainbow so I got in my car and went for my drive to take these videos and photos.

"It lasted an unusual amount of time, about 45 minutes, it would fade in at times and then appear again.

"We see rainbows but to see a full rainbow and a double rainbow I would say we have one per year if we are fortunate enough."

The video was taken on June 28 2021 at about 8pm.
