These awesome timelapse videos show the sheer power of Icebreaking ships as they carve a path through the frozen Artic waters.

Filmed by the chief officer of the Vaygach, nuclear-powered ship purpose-built for use in waters covered with ice, the stunningly serene footage shows the huge vessels making their way through a Russian economical zone of the Arctic ocean, named Northern Sea Route.

The Vaygach was designed for icebreaking operations on Arctic coastal routes tearing through ice up to 6 FOOT thick during winter and spring.

The traditional icebreaker hull is equipped with a highly raked stem and sloping sides designed to reduce ice loads and improve manoeuvrability.

Icebreakers are specifically designed to clear paths in frozen water. or pack ice by pushing straight into the frozen sheets using the weight of the ship to break even very thick ice.

The bending strength of sea ice is low enough that the ice breaks usually with minimal strain on the vessel.

Icebreakers have a specially designed hull to direct the broken ice around or under the vessel to prevent a build up of Ice that would slow down the ship.

The videos show many aspects of life aboard huge vessels from breaking apart the huge sheets of ice to showing close collaborations with other vessels in the route.

Victor Talybin began documenting his fascinating journeys in 2018.

The 31-year-old based in Russia said: "I make these videos to show the world how we work here, to let you know about this kind of job and to demonstrate the arctic mastery.

"We work on board totally green energy vessels because of their nuclear powered engines.

“We care about wildlife in the arctic zone and we help to monitor the polar bears and other populations.”

“All operations you can see on the videos are highly professional and difficult because of the strong ice influence, and it’s very far from routine marine ops all over the world.”

The clips within this video were filmed from 2018 to 2021.
