A huge screen in Tokyo's Shinjuku district shows the moment Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga declared a new state of emergency in the capital, on Thursday evening (July 8).

To curb a recent surge in infections, Suga announced a new COVID-19 state of emergency for the duration of the Olympics. The new measure is set to start on July 12 until August 22. The Olympics will now be held without spectators.

It is Tokyo's fourth state of emergency as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
