Bearcat trapped and released in Indonesia
This bearcat or binturong that were saved from locals fields in Indonesia has been released back into the wild.
In footage filmed on Friday (July 2) in Tanjung Baru, Tanah Datar Regency, Binturong in a cage after the protected animal fell into a wild boar trap set by local residents.
"The binturong was caught in a wild boar's snare right at the waist," said one of the rescuers.
A huge male Binturong that smells exactly like buttered popcorn was brought to the settlements to be reported to the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) officers.
BKSDA officers who were called found Binturong in good condition, and being fed by residents.
Binturong was taken to the Barulak forest to be released at night. As soon as the cage door was opened, Binturong quickly left the cage into the darkness of the forest.
The binturong is threatened by habitat loss due to logging and agribusiness, especially the oil palm industry. It is also hunted for bushmeat, traditional medicine, and the pet trade. A local coffee, made from beans that pass through a binturong’s digestive system, is also valued.
