Cape Town protests turn violent and riots, looting ensue as 1,700 arrested

Police and law enforcement officials in Cape Town prevented rioters from reaching the Capricorn Shopping Centre near the Vrygrond township in South Africa on July 14.

It is not known if the attempt to reach the shopping centre was part of the ongoing looting and riots across South Africa -- at least 1,700 have been arrested so far --or whether it's a retaliation for their shacks having been demolished earlier today.

The rioters torched a vehicle and blocked the main entrance into the township with rubble. Police swiftly responded and pushed the rioters back into the township.
