After hiking to the famous Wave rock formation in Arizona, I came across pools of water that were filled with strange looking shrimp. These are prehistoric tadpole shrimp who have remained unchanged for 300 million years. Their eggs can lie dormant in the sand, waiting until a heavy rain (which can sometimes take decades) which will then allow them to hatch. These murky pools of water held hundreds of these odd, wriggling shrimp. Many say these are living fossils, straight from the time of dinosaurs.
