Survivor with 90% of skin covered in third degree burns becomes viral sensation on TikTok – sharing how he lives with injuries and deals with trolls who call him 'ugly'.
A survivor who suffered third-degree burns in a horrific house fire aged just three years old has become a viral sensation on TikTok.
In 1990, Kenny Matthews, 34, from Sacramento, California, saw his life change overnight when a blaze left 90% of his body covered in burns.
The toddler was playing with toys while watching TV, when he heard a big bang from the living room window and a fire erupted.
Kenny’s grandfather, Sunny, managed to carry the child out through a window but tragically died at the scene from smoke inhalation.
“The incident happened when I was just three years old and I was living with my grandfather and my mom at the time,” Kenny, who now works full-time as a social media influencer, told Jam Press.
“So, she left me and my grandfather to watch me while she goes to the store and I was at home playing with my toys and watching TV like a typical little child.
“Then all of a sudden, I hear this commotion coming from the back with me and the windows just burst into flames.
“All I could do in that situation was just panic, but thank goodness I had my grandfather there with me.
“So, he had a solution to save me but at the same time, he was dying from the smoke inhalation.
“His solution was to pick me up under my arms and carry me over the window but unfortunately I got the blazed up by the fire.”
The fire burned all of Kenny’s clothes and left his skin unrecognisable.
However, despite the life-changing event, the 34-year-old tries to live every day with a smile.
Kenny has launched a TikTok account to share his life experiences and use his story to inspire others to “be the best version of themselves every day”.
He has racked up 1.1 million followers so far and has plenty of videos showing how he lives with his injuries.
This includes showing how he opens bottles with his hands, which were deformed because of the burns, eats with chopsticks and how he gets ready in the morning.
Other videos show Kenny revealing details of the house fire incident to his followers, while others show the TikTok star dancing to the camera and being himself.
However, while most people are kind on the social media site, Kenny does occasionally have to deal with trolls who call him "ugly" and leave hateful comments.
But he “doesn't care” about the comments and in one video which has since gone viral with 1.2 million views and 333,900 likes, he explains how he deals with bullies.
“Like a lot of people call me ugly, and to me it’s like so? Who cares?," he says in the clip.
“Like that’s supposed to hurt me? Like really? Boo?
“But I know my purpose. Because my purpose makes me beautiful.
“Confidence makes you beautiful, inspiring others makes you beautiful which I do.
"Being a leader makes you beautiful. Being a follower, now that’s tough.”
Social media users have been blown away by his positive attitude and praised the TikTok star.
“Yessir love is better than hate,” one person said. [sic]
“We do, indeed, not care,” another user added.
“Bruh probably still gets more girls than me good for him,” one user wrote.[sic]
“Why do people hate others because of what they look like?? It’s 2021 we need to stop being so judgmental about the way others appearances are,” another user said.
“Ur not ugly don’t let people let you down,” someone else added. [sic]
Kenny added: “It’s important to be the best version you can be every day, no matter what you look like.
“Confidence is the key, and don’t look to be liked by everybody.
“Start looking to be more respected than anything.
“But I will say to everybody, that every time you wake up early in the morning name at least three things that you are grateful for that you have now. Not for what you don’t have.”
Kenny is currently dating someone but hasn't revealed who the special lady is.
He is in the pursuit of happiness and hopes to spread love and joy, and finally reach a point in his life where he is truly content.
The survivor added: "Hopefully I'm still here in regardless of what's going on, and I hope I receive a lot of happiness and reach a point where I can announce to the world that I am finally happy."
