A tour guide was left ecstatic following a close-up encounter with a curious gray whale off the coast of Puerto Chale, Mexico.

Jamie Lally filmed as he was able to stroke a whale on the nose.

He said: "Baja California, Mexico, is the best place in the world to get up close and intimate with gray whales during their yearly migration to breed.

"On all of my trips prior to this one, I was the guide, so whenever the Whales would get close, I'd have to go to the opposite side of the boat in order to balance it, so I never got the opportunity to stroke them.

"On this trip, however, I went with some friends, so I wasn't guiding and a female gray whale gave me the perfect opportunity to give her a nose rub.

"I was so overwhelmed and happy that I couldn't hold in my excitement! It was so nice to finally get a chance to do what I had seen so many of my clients do."

This footage was filmed on February 13.
