Ahwazi Arabs, indigenous to Iran's southwest region, are angry over water shortages, leading them to protest late Thursday (July 15).

The protestors set fire to tires, blocking roadways at the oil-rich, restive province in southwestern Iran.

The Ahwazi have been protesting the devastating damages of their homeland due to decades of unregulated pollution diversion of water resources.

While it has not yet properly reached global consciousness, the Ahwazi people indigenous to what is currently the southwest region of Iran have been protesting the devastating damage that has been caused to their homeland due to decades of unregulated pollution diversion of water resources. While the once-fabled Karoun River still runs through Awhaz, its upstream freshwater has been systematically diverted by dams and other means in order to provide water to ethnically Persian areas such as Isfahan, even as its southerly waters have been polluted by a combination of unchecked oil and gas exploitation, improper garbage disposal, and even medical waste. This has led to a deadly combination of desertification and drought that has left Ahwaz and its internationally recognized wetlands eroding almost by the day.
