Saharan Dust as seen over a cotton field with wind turbines near the community of Chapman Ranch, Texas during an evening. A faint visual of Saharan Dust can be seen above the wind turbines. The Saharan Air Layer (SAL) is an extremely hot, dry and sometimes dust-laden layer of the atmosphere that often overlies the cooler, more-humid surface air of the Atlantic Ocean. It carries upwards of 60 million tons of dust annually over the ocean and into places such as the Gulf Coast of Texas. This annual phenomena sometimes cools the ocean and suppresses Atlantic Tropical development.
