At least 25 die in Mumbai landslide induced by heavy rains, several believed trapped
Twenty-five people died in house collapses triggered by landslides in Mumbai early on Sunday 18 July.
The landslides followed incessant rain which caused severe flooding, disrupting train and road transport.
Seventeen people died as a compound wall came crashing down on some houses on a hill during a landslide.
The retaining wall of the Bharatnagar locality in Mumbai's Mahul area collapsed at 1am. Seven people were injured and taken to nearby Rajawadi hospital.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai.
A sudden change in climatic conditions led to Mumbai witnessing over 100mm (3.9 inches) rainfall in six hours, the IMD said.
It also changed the rains forecast for the city from orange to red alert. Extremely heavy rainfall means precipitation of more than 204.5mm in 24 hours, while heavy rainfall ranges between 115.6mm to 204.4mm rainfall, according to the IMD.
Several areas of India are battling unusually heavy rain, as is much of western Europe and several areas of the US. Meanwhile, Siberia in Russia, and other parts of the world, are battling wildfires. Scientists say such extreme weather events are made more likely by climate change.
