Hundreds of surfers in Cornwall enjoy UK heatwave ahead of 'freedom day'

The seas were packed with surfers and swimmers in Cornwall, UK, as temperatures rose across the country on Sunday 18 July.

The hot weather this weekend has followed an unusually cool late June and early July, but comes in stark contrast to weather experienced in nearby Germany, Belgium and elsewhere, where extreme floods have devastated large areas.

The public's embrace of being outdoors also comes as England prepares for what has been called 'freedom day' on Monday, when most coronavirus restrictions will be lifted. Other parts of the UK -- Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland -- will keep many of their restrictions in place.

Car parks near the beaches of Polzeath on the north coast of Cornwall, were filling up by 9am as surfers flocked to the sea.

Video showed huge numbers of surfers enjoying the waves early in the morning.
