Rescue Operation As 17 Dead in a Compound Wall Collapse In Mumbai, India
This footage was filmed and produced 18 July 2021.
Images of rescue operations from the Compound wall collapse site at Bharatnagar, Chembur area in Mumbai where more than 17 people are feared to be killed. The wall collapsed due to a landslide caused by heavy incessant rains for the last few days in Mumbai.
Translation of the soundbite with Kaveri Satyam, Shanty owner and survivor:
[3:26-3:40]
“Due to the landslide, a big gaping hole has formed in the compound wall. The mud and rocks have fallen on my house. My household goods are scattered all over the floor. There is so much debris inside that the house looks like a dump yard”.
Vanita Narayan Aarekar, Shanty owner and survivor:
[3:41-3:52]
“After about midnight there was a big thundering noise. We came running out to see what has happened and we saw that the wall has collapsed. I was camping outside in the rains with my children and grandchildren the entire night”.
[3:53-4:06]
“The water was gushing down very heavily. There is a gutter over there for the overflowing water but it was choked. There no way for the water to drain out and so the rainwater got logged behind the wall leading to its collapse.”
