This pet cat got into a tense standoff with a 4-feet-long cobra in Bhubaneswar, eastern India.

Sampad Kumar Parida filmed as his cat named Chunni stood firm against a cobra that raised its hood in an attempt to intimidate the pet.

The standoff lasted for 45 minutes until a wildlife official from Snake Helpline arrived and caught the cobra on July 17.

Subhendu Mallik, General Secretary of Snake Helpline, said: “We thoroughly checked the cat and did not find any fang mark on her. Cobras are capable of killing cats, but this cat was willing to put her life on the line to protect her family.”

The cobra was later released into a nearby forest.

Sampad Kumar Parida, a resident of Bhubaneswar, heard a commotion in his backyard on July 17.

When he checked, he saw his pet cat ‘Chunni’ fighting with a four-feet-long cobra, which had entered his backyard.

Though the two rivals broke off as he entered, Chunni stood near the cobra, which had raised its hood to strike, refusing to let the snake move an inch.

The stand off continued for nearly 45 minutes till Arun Kumar Baral, a volunteer from Snake Helpline, reached the house and caught the cobra. It was put in a bag and released in a forest later.
