The officials arrested 13 smugglers for poaching the critically endangered red-crowned roofed turtle found in the Chambal river, along with pangolin. These miscreants were involved in the illegal trading of pangolin scales and rare turtle shells. Fortunately, all the accused were presented in the district court of Sagar and were sentenced to maximum imprisonment of seven years each under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, while the verdict was given by Chief Judicial Magistrate of Sagar, Vivek Pathak.
Besides, the officials imposed a fine of Rs. 5 lakh (USD 6,689) on the main accused, Manivannan, while a fine of Rs. 50,000 (USD 668) on seven culprits and Rs. 20,000 (USD 267) each on the rest five. Moreover, the prosecution officer-in-charge, Sudha Vijay Bhadauria, revealed that this was the highest sentence given in the case of wildlife smuggling.
Furthermore, the red-crowned roofed turtle and pangolin scales were smuggled from the Chambal river to international places like China, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar.
