Customs officials seize gold worth $54,075 from man at airport in southern India

A man flew from Dubai with gold worth Rs. 40.35 lakh (USD 54,075) to southern India's Tamil Nadu on July 20. The incident took place at Chennai International Airport.

Visuals feature the officials recovering four bundles of gold wrapped with black adhesive tape. Following this, they retrieve a molten chunk of precious metal from within the packets and seize it on the spot.

The 23-year-old accused, identified as Chandru Sakhtivel, hailing from Viluppuram, who arrived from Dubai by Emirates flight EK-544 was intercepted at the exit based on suspicion. On further search, four bundles of gold paste weighing 948 grams (2.08 lbs) were recovered from him while on extraction around 810 grams (1.78 lbs) of 24k gold worth Rs. 40.35 lakh (USD 54,075) was retrieved and seized. He was further arrested under Customs Act while an investigation into the matter is underway.
