Republican city council member in Alabama sparks outrage after saying "do we have a house n****r in here?" to a Black woman during meeting
A "disgusting" white GOP city council member in Alabama has sparked outrage after using a racial slur during a council meeting.
Councilman Tommy Bryant, 76, was attending a Tarrant, Alabama city council meeting on Monday 19th July when he used the word "n****r" in reference to a black woman.
Video footage shows Republican Tommy speaking with Tarrant’s first Black mayor, 41-year-old Wayman Newton, over some racially provocative comments his wife had allegedly made on Facebook.
Tommy denies his wife has made any racial comments in recent times but other members in the meeting, including mayor Newton - allege that she has.
Tommy defends himself by stating that his wife does not speak on his behalf.
An unidentified person in the audience later states that Bryant’s wife used the n-word on Facebook.
Tommy then loudly says: "Let’s get to the n-word."
He then stands up from his chair and shouts: "Do we have a house n***** in here?"
The council member is pointing at another person in the meeting - Veronica Freeman.
He then demands that Veronica, who is sitting next to Newton, stands up from her seat.
His comments visibly send shockwaves across attendees, some of whom can be heard letting out a gasp.
Veronica was reportedly so shocked by the use of the racial slur that she began sobbing and later left the meeting.
Video footage of the incident was shared on Twitter and people flocked to comment on it - with many calling for Tommy to resign from his role.
One person wrote: "Layers of disgusting here but what takes the cake for me is how comfortable he felt in saying these words as if he were just making normal conversation. Not a chance in hell this was a mistake."
Another said: "What the bloody hell and why is that racist d**k still standing?"
"This is what systemic racism is all about. When a white council member who feels comfortable enough to use a term like that during a city meeting and it produces hardly any reaction," another person commented.
"There's too much evil to even keep with on a day-to-day basis. This is so disgusting. And nobody did anything. Which is even crazier," another Twitter user said.
"OMG this is disgusting. I can't believe anyone would say this, let alone a city council member," another said, while one person commented: "#TommyBryant needs to go."
"Black people (and other people of color) - NEVER accept that kind of disrespect. If you let them do it once, they’ll do it 1000 times. Speak up with confidence. Fear not!" another Twitter user added.
Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl issued the following statement:
"The Alabama Republican Party is deeply troubled by the racially charged outburst and disrespect shown by Councilman Tommy Bryant.
"Such language is completely unacceptable in any setting, and even more concerning coming from an elected official.
"We are proud to have Mayor Wayman Newton as a member of the Jefferson County Republican Party and deeply appreciate his commitment to serving his constituents honorably, even in the face of adversity."
Jam Press had contacted Tommy Bryant for comment.
