This weekend, Turkey's Diyanet Vakfi and the National Awqaf Foundation of South Africa (Awqaf SA) has partnered with several local and international community-based organisations, and will be distributing food and meat packs to 10,000 vulnerable families across the country.

A total of 62,000 kgs of food and meat packs have been prepared and will be distributed to various communities in Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg, Bloemfontein, Gauteng, and in the Eastern Cape at Mvezo, the birthplace of former statesman, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. A breakdown of the relief packs include 30, 000 kgs of meat in 3 kg parcels and 32, 000 kgs of 5 kg mealie meal bags, kindly donated by MealSA.

“Through our #ShareTheCare campaign, we are humbled to be able to bring some relief to communities who have faced immense hardship due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We are also making every effort to reach those left vulnerable and destitute following the recent spate of protest action and looting in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Gauteng, and taxi violence in the Western Cape,” said Awqaf SA Deputy CEO Mickaeel Collier.

“On behalf of Awqaf SA, would like to thank the Turkish Diyanet Vakfi, the Muslim Judicial Council, the Turkish Consulate General in Cape Town, the Royal House of Mvezo Komkhulu, Meal SA, TURKSAY, and the Imam Development Programme for making this massive distribution drive possible."

Mr Sinan Yesildag, the Turkish Consul General in Cape Town, said that Turkey is proudly one of the most charitable nations in the world.
