A property expert has revealed his top tips for keeping cool during the heatwave – including a “genius” sleeping hack that has gone viral.

Kyle Mattison, 29, from Portsmouth, shared his clever tricks as temperatures in the UK continue to soar.

The marketing officer and property enthusiast is known as That Property Guy on social media. He shared his tips with his 308,000 TikTok followers.

In the video, which has been viewed over four million times, he says: "I don't know about you but I'm starting to struggle with this heat, so here are some ways to keep your house cool.

"It might sound daft, but keep your windows shut and draw your curtains. During the day, this will keep the hot air out.

"And then you're going to want to circulate cool air inside the house, so fill up some bowls with water and some ice – bowls of water will cool down the house, especially if you use a fan.

"If you have to open the windows, open a couple at either ends of the house and this creates a through-draft. Open loft windows as well."

Kyle also suggests a way to cook without heating up your kitchen.

He says: “As ovens create heat, try and do your cooking outside - best to use a barbeque if you can."

If you struggle to go to sleep when it's hot, Kyle advises to ditch the duvet.

He explains: “You can always get your bedding, put it in a bag and put it in the freezer just before you go to bed.

“Sounds a bit wacky but it cools your bedding right down and it's great for when you're trying to sleep."

Lastly, Kyle suggests switching your lightbulbs.

“Halogen light bulbs create heat, so try and change them to LEDs if you can. The added benefit is that they use less energy,” he said.

"And turn off major appliances where you can – it might stop you getting hot and flustered, and appliances generate heat as well."

The viral video received over 524,000 likes and 3,900 comments.

“I thought it would help a few people, but didn’t think it would get this kind of attention,” Kyle told Jam Press.

“The reaction has been great – a lot of people didn’t know the tips that were in the video.

“They’ve been saying it helps them sleep better at night and stay cool during the day.”

One fan said: “Mate that sheet idea is genius though, I’ve got Covid and it’s 28 degrees... I need this.”

“Great stuff! I changed my house to LEDs earlier this year, my house is two degrees cooler than this time last year which is huge,” another person added.

Someone else quipped: “But if I did that I wouldn’t have anything to complain about and if I can’t complain am I even British?”
