An elephant calf was rescued after it had fallen into a well in Kodagu, Karnataka, on July 27.

Visuals show officials, with the help of another elephant, using ropes to haul the calf out of the muddy pit.

Once out, the baby elephant sprinted into the forest to join up with the rest of its herd.

In a stroke of luck, a hapless calf got a new lease on life after encountering a life-threatening situation in southern India's Karnataka on July 27. The incident took place in Bhadragola in the Kodagu district.

Visuals feature the calf struggling to get out of the small barrier-less open well amid the bushes in broad daylight. The little jumbo attempts to mount the surface but slips each time, following which the rescuers pour water on top of it to relieve it from its distressed situation. After a while, they dig out a section of the land adjacent to the well to provide the mammal a safe passage. Due to a slippery muddy slope, the calf continues to slide down, due to which a Kumki tusker pulls the little one out of the pit. Drenched, the elephant manages to come out and walks towards the forest cover.

On the night of July 26, the five-year-old calf was strolling with its herd in the coffee estate that belonged to Subramani when it accidentally slipped and got stranded inside the open well due to lack of any protective barrier. Upon hearing the sounds of trumpets, the forest officials were alerted to save the little jumbo.

A team comprising of Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) from Thithimathi, Utappa Pandiyanda, along with Range Forest Officer (RFO) Ashok Hunagunda, Deputy Range Forest Officers Umasankar and Srinivas, and a Rapid Response Team (RRT) including Dr. Sanath Muliya, Dr. Thamaiah, and a team from Wildlife Institute of India (WII) Dehradun were present at the spot.

Moreover, with the help of a Kumki tusker named Krishna from Mathigod Elephant Camp, they pulled the calf out using ropes after a three-hour-long rescue operation. As soon as the jumbo appeared out, it sprinted into the forest cover to join its herd while the villagers complained of incurring huge losses as these wild elephants stray from their corridor and enter their fields, destroying most of their produce.
