Nighttime tsunami warning sirens sound after Alaska earthquake
A magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska on Wednesday evening (July 28) triggering a tsunami warning.
Hundreds of tourists visiting the region were evacuated after sirens played and people were told to flee to higher ground.
Footage from the coastal city of Kodiak shows how sirens were still playing shortly after midnight.
Resident Joseph Pena, a Filipino working in the area on a summer job, said: ‘This is the scariest thing that’s happened to me while I’ve been living here.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the ‘notable earthquake’ hit 60 miles southeast of Chignik, Alaska at 10:15pm local time.
A tsunami warning was issued and the threat was being assessed for different regions.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a warning for the U.S. state of Hawaii and the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam.
